Analysing Social Media

As we have to create a social media page for our artist I decided to collect my favourite artist social media pages and analyse them, to get inspiration and to see what elements they have in common. I focused on Instagram pages because I prefer the layout and think it’s more effective for creating a brand for an artist, though I also looked at websites.
The artists I chose range from pop stars (like Travis Scott) to lesser known / independent bands (like Squid).

Social media is purely a marketing strategy when it comes to musicians/artists, therefore it’s important to keep a consistent brand/persona throughout the posts. However as it is user-controlled it allows for more relatability, and allows the audience to get to know the person behind the music. This relatability factor is especially important for smaller/indie artists because it builds a more personal connection with the audience, and is very conventional.

I created a list of the types of posts I will create for my artist’s Instagram page:
• Selfies or poses (mainly showing outfit and background)
• Musician being a musician… picture of their work-life (instruments, music technology…)
• Relatable pictures / short videos. Including silly content
• Images from music video / digipak photoshoot.. teasers
• Edits using the same editing effects as the mv/digipak (such as overlays, blurry, high exposure)
• Posters for music release, tours/concerts
Repetition is also important, but with some slight variation (such as including multiple forms of the same poster to retain a house style, or showing the same performer with similar outfits in different posts.)
