Goodwin & Mulvey Theories

In this post I will explore two media theorists. These are applied to music videos, and can therefore help me create my own project: by understanding the theory behind it.

Andrew Goodwin (1992):

He also says there is intertextual references in MVs, but I have an upcoming post which looks at that in more detail.

Laura Mulvey:

A feminist who in 1975 wrote the essay 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema' which introduced the Male Gaze Theory.

• Women can only be portrayed in two ways: As virginal and innocent, or as a “sexy whore” (Mulvey’s words)

The virgin/whore dichotomy. This is a common trope in horror films: where the virgin survives, and the whore gets killed.
